Frankfurt Airport versus Frankfurt-Hahn: Do Not Mix Them Up

Every year, travellers book a bed at Frankfurt Airport for a flight from “Frankfurt” that leaves from an airfield 120 km away. Frankfurt-Hahn is a former US air base in the Hunsrück hills, marketed with the city’s name and used mainly by Ryanair and cargo airlines, and it has no rail link and no connection to Frankfurt Airport except a bus via the city. This guide explains how to tell the two apart, how to travel between them, and why nothing on this site helps with a Hahn flight.

Two airports, two codes

Frankfurt Airport, code FRA, is Germany’s largest airport, 12 km south-west of the city centre, with Terminal 1 for Lufthansa and Star Alliance, Terminal 3 for most other airlines, two railway stations and the 17 hotels on this site. Frankfurt-Hahn, code HHN, is 120 km west near the Moselle, in Rhineland-Palatinate rather than Hesse, with one terminal, a Ryanair base, some charter and cargo traffic and a car park. Your booking shows the code: FRA is the airport with the ICE station and the Sheraton at the terminal; HHN is the one with a bus.

Getting between them

There is no train to Hahn. From Frankfurt Airport, take the S8 or S9 to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (11 to 15 minutes) and walk to the coach stops on the south side of the station, from which the Flibco shuttle bus runs to Hahn in about 2 hours 10 minutes, several times a day, timed to Ryanair’s waves; book at flibco.com or through the ticket resellers, and check the current stop, because it has moved between the station’s south and north sides in recent years. Allow four hours from Terminal 1 to Hahn check-in. By car the A60 and A61 take about 90 minutes; a taxi is well over €150. Buses from Hahn also serve Mainz, Koblenz, Trier and Luxembourg, which for some travellers are closer than Frankfurt.

Hotels

The hotels on this site are all at Frankfurt Airport or in Gateway Gardens and Kelsterbach beside it, which puts them two and a half hours from Hahn. For an early Hahn departure, stay in one of the small hotels and guesthouses in the villages around the airfield (Hahn, Lautzenhausen, Kirchberg, Sohren), or near Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof for the first Flibco bus of the morning; our airport to city centre guide covers the S-Bahn to the station. The other “Frankfurt” trap

Frankfurt (Oder) is a city on the Polish border 550 km east with no airport; the risk there is a train ticket, not a flight. Tips

Check the three-letter code before you book a hotel, not after. If you have already booked an FRA hotel for an HHN flight, most Booking.com rates cancel free until a day or two before arrival. And if you are choosing between a Ryanair fare from Hahn and a Lufthansa or other fare from Frankfurt, add the bus fare of around €15 to €25 and the four hours each way to the Hahn price before deciding.
